"Guilford County Schools is aware of the decision by officials at Varina High School to direct law enforcement to escort the Grimsley High School band out of the stadium.
"We understand that both schools’ bands played at various times during Friday night’s game and that concerns were raised regarding when bands are permitted to play according to Virginia’s athletic league rules. We respect the responsibility of host administrators to enforce applicable rules and expectations consistently for all participants.
"We are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the decision and will work through the appropriate channels to address any outstanding concerns."
According to an affiliate with the Grimsley band, who wished to remain anonymous, the Varina marching band was playing while the ball was in play during the first half of the game.
At halftime, Grimsley's band leadership consulted with the head referee, who told them he would not penalize either band for playing while the ball was in play.
According to the Grimsley source, after playing music while the ball was in play twice in the second half, the public address announcer warned Grimsley again. Varina's band was not playing at the time since they were on a break after the halftime show.
Grimsley ignored these requests and kept playing while the ball was in play, which led to Varina officials ejecting the Grimsley band from the stadium with a police escort.
