The 2026 Denver Broncos have been a shaky team through four weeks so far. While they've had their good moments, their Week 4 loss to the San Francisco 49ers highlighted some major concerns about the team.

Not only are the Broncos in a shaky spot with their offense thanks to Bo Nix's struggles, but the defense, which is struggling to generate sacks, is now going to be without its top two cornerbacks. Riley Moss is out, and so is Patrick Surtain II.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler is especially worried about the Surtain injury, as the already shaky defense might be in serious trouble while the former Defensive Player of the Year misses time due to an ankle injury.

When asked the question, "Which player's Week 4 injury could be most detrimental to his team?" Fowler answered with Surtain from the Broncos.

"Normally I would go with the star quarterback who's hurt, but Surtain's absence could have a sizeable ripple effect for a team on the ropes," Fowler writes.

The Broncos being without Surtain is a massive loss, whose absence is made a whole lot worse with Moss also banged up and set to miss a week or two.

While there are other serious injury issues around the NFL, the Broncos being without Surtain will make their defense, which has been a bit underwhelming so far this season, a lot more questionable.

With the 0-4 Los Angeles Chargers as the Broncos' first test without Surtain this season, there normally would be a bit of confidence in their ability to pull off a win.

But the Chargers built a little bit of momentum last week amid a late comeback against a tough defense in the Seattle Seahawks.

The Broncos, on the other hand, are heading in the opposite direction, with the signs pointing down for Denver, even without the Surtain injury.

Now, down their best player, the Broncos' defense has become a legitimate area to worry about. Sure, they can still beat a winless Chargers team this week, but it would not be a huge surprise if the Surtain-less Broncos lost to the Chargers this week.

Moss being out hurts, but the Broncos being without Surtain is a major blow to the team's chances, regardless of the opponent. Fowler has good reason to be concerned, as this defense might be in serious trouble down their top cornerback in Week 5 and beyond.
