Borussia Mönchengladbach claimed their first points of the Bundesliga season with a 3-2 upset victory at VfB Stuttgart on Friday and with it avoided setting an unwanted league record.

Injury-plagued Gladbach lost the first six games of the season and things looked grim for them when Ermedin Demirovic fired Stuttgart ahead in the fifth minute, with goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas not looking good.

But Stuttgart lost their momentum and Gladbach were level in the 38th when Joe Scally made a big deflection with his heel after a shot from team-mate Zento Uno.

The goal boosted Gladbach and they were ahead in the 51st. Wael Mohya robustly beat two defenders close to the goal line and laid the ball back for Suto Machino to fire into the roof of the net.

Demirovic came close to an equalizer in the 64th but Gladbach made it 3-1 two minutes later when Scully managed to keep the ball in play in a scramble and lobbed it across the goalmouth for Mohya to head home.

Demirovic got Stuttgart back into the game in the 83rd, but Gladbach held on to the three points after Moritz saved from Bilal El Khannouss.

"The lads awarded themselves for their performance. We showed a lot of passion," Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder told Sky TV. "It was very important for the fans and the club. But we are still last, this can only be a beginning."

Gladbach remain last but with the victory avoided becoming the first team in Bundesliga history to lose their first seven games of a season.

Champions League club Stuttgart are 14th with six points as their difficult start into the domestic season continues.
