The Chicago Blackhawks are not off to a great start in 2026-27. Connor Bedard and his teammates are currently second-to-last in the Western Conference with nine points. They are 4-10-1 this year, only slotting higher than the Vancouver Canucks in the standings.
The Blackhawks were not supposed to be this far down in 202-27. Yes, it’s still early. Chicago and the rest of the NHL are playing an 84-game schedule for the first time since the 1993-94 season. Right now, this team is only 15 games into that schedule.
Even though it is early, it feels as if this team is heading down a downhill slope they may not be able to recover from. Bedard is putting in a good effort with 10 points in nine games. Patrick Kane, Anton Frondell, and Roman Kantserov are also contributing. But the team remains stuck in quicksand, it seems.

Thankfully, there are ways to help Bedard, especially on the trade market. The Blackhawks have a ton of assets they can use to bolster their roster. It may be early, but with the way the season is going, they may need to swing that big trade sooner rather than later.
The Blackhawks should be targeting young players with years of control. Those players are more difficult to trade for, but again, this team has the assets to do it. And there is one particular player who would certainly transform this team in a positive direction.
Blackhawks would be ideal landing spot for Red Wings’ Simon Edvinsson
Rick Osentoski-Imagn ImagesThe Detroit Red Wings, an Original Six rival of the Blackhawks, have not had a great time on the ice either. Detroit is in a better spot, to be fair. But they are embroiled in a ton of drama off the ice that has created a few distractions.
Everyone is talking about the Red Wings and Dylan Larkin. The team’s former captain has refused to play amid an ongoing trade request. However, there has been less discussion about defenseman Simon Edvinsson.
Edvinsson is a 23-year-old defenseman who has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the NHL. He is a legitimate top-pairing defenseman who is currently a restricted free agent. He remains in his native Sweden because he does not have a contract.
The young Red Wings defenseman has also requested a trade. This is where the Blackhawks come in. Edvinsson is essentially everything Chicago should be looking for in a trade target. He is young, the acquiring team will sign him on their terms, and he should be able to anchor this blueline for years to come.
The Blackhawks did address their defense in the summer, to be fair. Bowen Byram came over in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres. This trade included the fourth overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Buffalo used that selection to draft defenseman Dax Rudolph.
Byram has played a lot of minutes when he’s been on the ice. However, that’s just the thing. The Blackhawks’ prized offseason pickup simply hasn’t been on the ice. He hasn’t played since October 13th as he works through an upper-body injury.
The Blackhawks could trade for Edvinsson and have him lead this group until Byram returns. Once the veteran is back, the two can be the solidifying force at the top of the lineup this team needs. They could also be a huge help to Bedard and young goaltender Spencer Knights, who are doing all they can to help this team stay afloat in the Central Division.
