The New York Mets are in one of those very weird situations in which they should be sellers, but because of how big their payroll is and how many guys are signed to long-term deals, it might not be the best idea to trade anybody who is an impactful player and instead try to get better in the offseason.

With how much money Steve Cohen has, a really good farm system, and some big league talent who could be traded, the Mets do have a slew of options. At this point, it's really just about making the right moves.

It's May 13, and while the Mets still have some time to figure things out, I don't expect that to be the case anytime soon.

This year has been as ugly as imaginable, and trading off some pieces seems to be the better plan. Despite that reality, it doesn't sound like the Mets plan to do so.

“The Mets are not close to selling. They have plenty of talent, the second-highest payroll in baseball and want Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor to play together. They believe they can turn this thing around and fight for a playoff berth…

“Holmes is signed through the 2027 season. That controllability, as well as his 1.86 ERA this season, would make him highly coveted. Peralta, meanwhile, was acquired from the Brewers in the offseason and is a free agent in the winter. Selling him and possibly looking to sign him in the winter is something that the organization could consider,” Robert Murray reported.

The payroll situation is definitely the biggest factor here. If the Mets weren't an expensive team and just had a bunch of relatively talented, cheap guys, selling with the record they currently have would make a lot of sense.

However, I can definitely understand why they might hold off on moving some of their bigger-name players, especially if they believe they'll be around in the future, mainly with a guy like Freddy Peralta.
