Augustana baseball eyes World Series berth

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Augustana baseball emerged from the Central Region victorious and is set to take on Central Missouri for a spot in the College World Series. Augustana came into the NCAA tournament as a No. 5 seed. The Vikings are now preparing for the fourth super regional appearance in program history.
“We kind of all thought that we didn’t deserve a five seed,” sophomore Kobe Eikemeier said. “I think we kind of wanted to prove to the commitee like hey, we didn’t deserve to be that five seed after the way we’ve been playing on the field.”

“It doesn’t matter, doesn’t matter what seed you are,” head coach Tim Huber said. “You’ve got to get in, number one, which we did. And then you just got to prove it on the field.”
Augie proved it by defeating regional host and third-ranked Pittsburg State twice. It was a well-rounded effort with nine different Vikings recording hits and seven recording runs in just the winner-take-all game alone.
“That’s been another definition of what this year has been,” Huber said. “There hasn’t been one guy that’s carried us, there really hasn’t, whether that’s on the mound or offensively.”
“If I’m on base and someone’s up and they need to get that clutch hit, I have full faith that they’re going to do it because I saw them put that work in beforehand,” Jake Lundquist said. “It’s just a full trust within the guy next to you.”
Central Missouri is the team that stands between Augustana and a trip to the Division II College World Series. The Vikings head to Warrensburg with confidence in both their group and their game.
“They’re a very beatable team,” Eikemeier said. “I think we go there and we play the same ball we’ve been playing for the last two weeks, I think we’ve got a pretty good chance to make it to Cary.”
“One thing I always like to say is that we’re playing a kids game so let’s treat it like one and go out there and have fun,” Lundquist said.
The best-of-three series will take place Thursday and Friday at 5 p.m., with an if-necessary game scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.
