‘I’m worried about the game’: Jon Gruden voices concerns with direction NFL is headed

Former NFL head coach and Super Bowl champion Jon Gruden hasn’t coached in the league since 2021, when emails he sent years earlier containing racist, misogynistic, and homophobic language led to his resignation as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. In the years since, Gruden has made it clear that he’d love the opportunity to return to coaching.
He recently sat down with Suzy Kolber of Scripps Sports and shared what he thought was playing a role in his absence from the league, and shockingly, he pointed at a reason that has nothing to do with the controversial emails.

“I don’t like what we’re doing to the game,” Gruden said. “And one of the reasons I’m probably not in the game right now is I voiced a lot of my displeasure with the direction of the game. So, I think we have some issues that got to get solved pretty quick.
“I know I could help solve some of the problems, but I’m not going to be one of these guys to bang on a soapbox here today, but the game of football has changed dramatically in the last several years, and I’m worried about the game.”
One of the largest issues Gruden has voiced with the league is the officiating. The former coach has argued that refereeing crews lack consistency and are disproportionately dictating the game outcome. Another thing he hasn’t loved has been the NFL’s increasing international footprint, as he feels if the league cared about growing the game, more investment should be made at the youth level.
In an appearance on Not Just Football with Cam Heyward, Gruden told the Steelers’ defensive tackle that he was worried about the readiness level for players coming out of college.
“I’m worried about the game to be honest with you,” Gruden said. “A lot of people think the game is evolving. I think the game is dissolving. We’re just not communicating… You got to recognize the defense, recognize the coverage, and then you start to communicate. And if you can recognize defenses and communicate what you want to do, you got a chance to execute.”
Gruden clearly feels that his willingness to express his concerns with the league is a big part of why he hasn’t been able to make a return. Along with the unsurfaced emails, it’s clear he has an uphill battle to climb.
