The Bengals can throw the football at a ridiculously high level because Burrow and some of his receivers are so talented.
Ultimately, when the Bengals play their best football, their pass game is among the best in the NFL. However, there have been concerning signs in the run game early in the season.
The Bengals haven't been able to get things going on that side of the ball, and after Burrow said he wouldn't mind throwing the football every single play, it raised eyebrows. Not to say that a quarterback shouldn't believe that, especially one as talented as him, but if Cincinnati doesn't have the run game that it needs, there are going to be problems on the offensive side of the football.
One former NFL coach said that recently, adding that if a team is going to run the football at the level the Bengals are, it typically won't lead to much success.
“There was an old stat I learned from Bill Parcels, one of my mentors, about runs and completions,” Rex Ryan said, H/T Heavy. “If you win that battle, you’ll win, like 75% of the games, all right. Now, they can throw for a gazillion yards. But when you have no rushing attempts, you’re probably not going to win.
“This team doesn’t understand time and score of the game, all right. Anything within one possession, like a 7-point or less lead, they throw 71% of the time.”
It's tough to disagree with what Ryan is saying here in the simple sense that nearly every team in the NFL that's been a Super Bowl contender over the past couple of years has an above-average run game.
As for Cincinnati, even if the offense wants to focus on the pass, it still has to be hopeful that guys can do enough to throw the football at a high level. If teams can take away the run and sell out on the pass, there are going to be problems in the pass game, too, something Cincinnati has to consider over the next couple of months.
