The 27-year-old needed 7 hours 21:04 minutes for 3.86 kilometres of swimming, 180 kilometres of cycling and 42.195 kilometres of running.
He improved on the previous best long distance mark set by Kristian Blummenfelt at Ironman Texas in April of 7:21:24 hours. The Norwegian favourite finished second on his Roth debut after a comeback, crossing the line 5:20 minutes behind after Laidlow had trouble in the running section.
Rico Bogen from Leipzig impressed in his first long-distance triathlon with third place in 7:27:53 in Bavaria. No triathlete had previously been faster on his debut.
Different courses in triathlon mean the term world record is not used. There is also a distinction between long distance and full distance.
